Hi everyone,

I ride a 9'2' longboard in conditions mostly below chest high and am starting to walk forward and back. To make stepping easier does it make sense to attach the leash around the thigh or the ankle? Thanks for your help!

Bowman I find the below the knee position the most comfortable, just as you have it in your picture. It is mounted on bone structure.
Above on the thigh could produce a severe cut from tension on the soft flesh in a heavy wipeout.
The ankle is fine for similar bony reasons!
It can cause you to trip over your own cord or get caught between your toes ( most annoying) or wrap around your ankles and leave you hog tied.
I have seen guys who have had hip surgery wear a very wide back band ( like a back brace)with the leash attached.

Ankle and below knee personal choice really! :D
A narrow band would be very dangerous as there is no bony mounting other than the spine and strangulation of the gut could occur.

That happened to me! While doing an egg beater kick to turn my board around, the leash wrapped around my leg and jerked me back when I tried to pop up. Great advice that I'll try on Sunday!

Are there any disadvantages to having the leash under the knee?

No real disadvantages as far as I am aware , you can still tangle your feet or get it caught between your toes ( less often though).
I have surfed knee leash for at least 10 years no issues. :D touching wood now
