Hey guys, sorry to be a total rookie here! I'm currently looking at longboards and I've been doing quite a bit of research over the last couple of weeks. I'm still just a little bit unsure as to what length and volume I should be looking for in a board?

Useful things to know about me:
Height: 187cm (6'2)
Weight: 105kg (230lb)
I have good all round strength and can pop up well on land (no knee) due to being a rugby/basketball player.

Below are some potential boards I've been looking at (really like the look of number 4):

1. Measurements: 10'0 x 23'' x 3 1/6'' = 85.6L.
http://www.thesurfboardwarehouse.com.au ... e-log.html

2. Measurements: 9'7" x 23 " x 3 1/4" = 87.1L
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SURFBOARD-RE ... 35de1bc940

3. Measurements: 10' x 23'' x 3 1/8'' = Unsure about volume.

4. Measurements: 9'6" X 23 1/4 " X 3"
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Surfboard-PE ... 48620eca47

5. Measurements: 10'2" x 23 3/4" x 3 1/2" = Unsure about volume.
http://www.soulsurf.com.au/vintage-seco ... -longboard

6. Measurements: 9'6'' x 22 3/4'' x 3 1/2'' = Unsure about volume.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Surfboard-NE ... 541653186b

7. Measurements: 9'4'' x 22 3/4'' x 3'' = Unsure about volume.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/76-86-91-94- ... 418b0d871e

8. Measurements: 9'6'' x 23'' x 3'' = Unsure about volume.

At this point I'm not sure how to spot which boards are absolute garbage and which should fill my needs nicely. Any advice on the measurements I should be looking for would be great too.

Thanks heaps :woot:

Don't worry so much about volume for awhile. Longboard should be able to catch anything. Volume is more for the shorter crowd. That said, here is my feedback for the boards you listed:

1) NO it's a old style LOG that you need to do drop knee turns to turn or Stall Pivot turns.

2) NO it's a single. Try to find a 2 +1 fin set up if possible. Being it's a noserider it has a lot of tail kick. not good for you now

3) Okay shape seems fine. worried if theres a lot of concave under the nose ?

4) Like but wish it was a squash tail instead of rounded pin.

5) Like That is the same as the current NSP 10'2". So you can find the volume if you look that up. Those are really easy to catch waves on and they last a long time. BUT that particular color is over 8 years old when the NSP longboard line was called Southpoint.

6) NO stay away from wood veneer. looks good new but after a million shatters looks terrible. Plus hard to match ding repair to the wood

7) Okay But outline is too hippy. Won't have good speed, plus I think 9'6" up would be better.

8) Okay

From the look of the center box and side boxes, most of the board are made in China ( especially #3 ). Nothing wrong with that for your first couple of boards. The 10'2" is made in Thailand in the same facility that makes parts for Ferrari and Ducati's. Also check you local surf shop for used boards. Sometimes there's great deals, especially around tax time !!

Thanks for looking at them all! I'll take a closer look into the ones you liked and knock off the ones you don't. Cheers :)

Danny, hold your horses a little, since you are in Australia, There is more than Ebay to look at whereabouts are you I may know a reliable board shop near you. If you do go with, Waikikikichan suggestions number 2 have a look at their entire range, number 3 is not known for good quality, Number 4 the Sanctum range look at the entire range.
Number 5 The NSP or South Point go to Global Surf Industries, look at their current range and pricing.
Number 6 leave the wood finishes alone.
7 & 8 East Coast boards are quite good in quality, based on central coast of NSW.
Depending on where you live there will be some good secondhand longboards around.
Talk to me further before you make a decision. I'm online tomorrow morning :D
