Roy Stewart Tunnel Fin?

Postby IB_Surfer » Sun Apr 01, 2012 2:42 am

Hi Roy,

I was reading some old posts online that you had spent some time doing research on your tunnel fins and that, hypothetically, it could be used on a gun instead of using a thruster set up.

Have you come up with a tunel fin available for purchase and instalation into a normal fin box, wether longboard, future or fcs?

Well I use them on guns already, in waves of similar size to what i've seen you riding, so the hypothetical part is getting them in really big surf.

Anyway for bigger wave boards I use a small tunnel either behind a single fin or in place of a thruster back fin or quad rear fins.

No fin box is needed the fin is so stable in shape that it only needs to be glued on with some silicone roof sealer, that way it can be moved or removed without damaging the board or installing boxes. That's a tip I got from an engineer in South America who uses tunnels.

Depending on the board and wave size range a tunnel from 4 inch to 8 inch diameter will be ideal. I can make you one in wood if you like, or you could foil one out of plumbing pipe. Do you have a particular board in mind ?

I own a 9'6 x 3 x 23 performance longboard with a squash tail, set up with a center fin and sidebites.

I wouldn't even know where to begin making one LOL. If a plastic one out of pipe is not too much trouble I would not mind paying you to make it and ship it. Let me know

I can do that for you, but it's likely that your board has too much tail rocker for a tunnel, we'd really need to see the rocker first.

Roy, this is so cool: " it only needs to be glued on with some silicone roof sealer, that way it can be moved or removed without damaging the board or installing boxes"

it seems like nearly everything today has to be complicated. But, this isn't. Thanks for sharing this in our forum.

I fond this thread and it gave me an idea of what to do:

However, instead of gluing it to the board I am going to take an old fin and fit it to that, will be fun playing with that. Update later...
