Transition from shortboard to longboard

Hey all.. this is my first post on this site.. very nice site may I say.. Looks good!
I have always been a keen surfer, and always owned a longboard for small days..
Well I used to surf everyday, and now i only get to surf about once a week.. Plus with my age, the old arms just arnt as fit as they used to be, so I will be transitioning to longboarding pretty much full-time, although il keep my fish and whip that out now and again
I am from Australia and surf Bells, 13th and Torquay on a regular basis..
I am having trouble getting my board on my car though, I just bought a Lancer Coupe, the shortboard (6'4") fit into it , jusT.. but now im trying new ways to try and get the longboard on (its 8'4") Not a super sized longboard, but pretty big compared to this small car..
I have looked into getting the soft tie downs, however do I need to have 4 windows for these to work, or is there a way you can strap accross to the boot?
Anyone that can help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Howie
