Hey all,
So here's the situation. I'm 6'2" 185 lbs. I mainly ride my 2 9'6" longboards (one slightly more progressive than the other). My talent is about the level where I can drop in, bottom turn if need be, head down the line, stay with the curl by slowing/speeding (not so much turning). I tend to keep my stance in the middle of the board at all times, or up to the nose (on the 9'6"s), but have not really ever learned to surf the tail properly (might explaing the lack of cuts).
I've recently been riding a Minimal/Hybrid shape. It's a 6'8" 2+1 w/ a 19" rounded out nose. I really like the shape and size! But am wanting something a little more progressive/cruisy. NOW I'm getting a new board shaped for me, I'm a little lost on what to go for...
My current plan is to get a 7' 22" wide 2.5" thick board. Slightly rounded, but still pointed nose, 2+1 fin boxes, and have the shaper keep the max width more toward the front. These dimensions are based on my gut really, and other boards that I've wanted to own (but have not ridden)... The template we're working from is similar to the Lynch/Young Evolution/think Harbour Revolver shapes...
I'm in need of something that can handle peaky shoulder high waves and provide the proper ride. I'm not really looking to carve the crap of these waves (I wouldn't mind), but just to try my best to stay in the pocket and cruise. I'm a big fan of Nat Young morning of the earth. Up/down CRUISING middle of the board style.
Any advice or thoughts would be VERY welcome.
Things I'm unsure about:
What putting the width/foam/weight more forward ends up doing... The current template has it pretty centered.
What kind of tail to go for? The template is a rounded pin-tail.... I'm only experienced with Square and Swallow (my fish).
Should I just go for the full on pointed nose? What are the benefits (if any) of having it rounded out? (not looking to nose ride the thing..)
Also important to me paddling.
Opinion on the rails? How about the Bottom? Template is Single concave to V bottom.
Having written all of this out, I'm kind of tempted to just go with what he has for the template... And get another board at some point to satisfy my weird curiosities. But all the same, it is a custom... advice welcome & fully considered. Thanks!
