Fish surfing tips?

Postby Hang11 » Sun Oct 11, 2009 8:03 am

I just got given a fish. Been surfing longboards pretty much exclusively since 1992, and last time I rode a shortboard in anger, Tom Curren hadn't even borrowed Derek Hynd's board and the whole fish thing was off the radar :D But I'm keen to have a go on the new board. It's a pretty big floaty looking thing, twin fin, so I reckon it will float a fat old barney like me :D , but I'm picking that it will be a bit different to my preferred single fin longboard setup.

So any tips on how to get the best out of it, or at least a few waves on one? Or should I just donate it to the kids?

Don't donate it to the kids... yet
Fishes are fun! Actually, Im not a huge fan of traditional fat fishes, but a good laugh nonetheless. 8)

Catching waves on a fish - put your head as far forward as you dare, fail to catch a few waves, and then go a further six inches foward. Repeat until pearl.

Surfing down the line on a fish - pop up, then stop. Try again, and this time none of your longboarding standing there thing. Weight forward backward side to side rail to rail gotta keep movin' movin'.

Turning on a fish - lean, dig that fat rail in, fall off. Try again, this time going rail to rail in a more swoopy almost longboard like way.

Fall off fish - laugh a lot. :D

Me: About 34 inches round the middle

Board: 21.75"

It's a keel fin one, very traditional fishy looking shape and about 3 foot shorter than my usual boards

Cheers DBB! You're a star, I'll post some pics of my first go on it, should be in a couple of weeks now the icebergs have started to melt and the killer penguins have gone south.
