Fin placement

I'm sure this has been touched on many times, but I couldn't find the specific info I was looking for.
I have a classic single fin longboard. I am wondering where the best place to position the fin is.
I mostly surf pitchy beach breaks in the knee to chest range, possibly some should-high days. I don't necessary want to try to carve around like a shortboarder, but I want the board to turn smoothly and set nice trim.
Any tips on fin positioning would be great. I know the standard answer is forward for better turning and back for better drive/noseriding. Just looking for a little more feedback based on the size/type of waves I surf.
