My Longboard is longer than stated on the stringer

Hi there,

I've had my MacTavish Fireball 9ft 6" board for a couple of years and i'm loving it. But having cleared a new cupboard in my house to store it, I was surprised it did not fit standing upright in a room with a ceiling height of 10ft 6". So when I measured my board from nose to tail, it is more like 11ft 8". I couldn't belive it. I measured some of my other boards and the same thing: my 6ft 6 is more like 7ft 8; the 7ft 2 more like 7ft 10...

What's going on? I thought the measurement was tail to nose, but it seems more like nose to middle fin... Is that normal, as I can't seem to find any info on the web about that????? Perhaps i've been riding a canoe these past two years...

Whoa that is odd. Board length is from nose to tail. Boards should be marked up just prior to glassing so you might expect 1/4 difference or an inch if the shaper was being lazy and didn't bother to check.

You should have checked the resourses on this site first.

Was the shaper drunk when he measured the board  Might be an honest mistake he might have marked up the board and confused the dims with another board he had just shaped.

It seems bizarre that you have the same issue with the other boards - are you sure your not drunk in measuring - easy to make a cock up when looking at a tape measure bleary eyed  as all my boards when i measure them all turn out to be pretty much exact to what the shaper wrote down

I always call the length the length of the curved stringer.
It's how you'd measure it in a shaping room - put a tape measure at the foot of the board then run it out along the stringer, and then read off the length at the nose : length = stringer length (including the curvature).

So a 6'2" might be 6'0" if measured vertically.

So to make a 6'0" board, the shaper would shape to a 6'2" stringer - just a thought.
