Surfing Waves

I'm currently fascinated with long boarding, and I was wondering how does one walk, hang five, and even hang ten on a long board? I've tried to set my rail, but I'm only able to perform some wacky two-step shuffle before getting thrown off. Google and Youtube are showing me info on long boarding pavement, but not the ocean.
