you're about the same size as me, and for a mini mal, that may be a bit short. i'd look in maybe the 7'3" range, maybe even a little bigger. but it also depends on the shape of the board, thickness, width, etc.

No such thing as a 6' + mini mal!!! Mabie a fun board but not a mini mal. Mal's start in the 7'+ range realy 8' but some 7'+er's make it due to width and thickness. If your a newbie I'd sugest a lil longer platform and your size is roughly mine so say a 8'/8'5" mini mal. I try to keep in mind were not all rich like outhers but if your going a new first board and coupled with being a beginner would 1st recomend you try and rent, borrow as many diff boards you can to start fine tuning your real need( plus get more water time). 2nd would recomend purchasing a used stick mabie posbly even get a couple for the same price( and you won't totaly cry when you get some ouchies on them vs a new one + you can invite somebody else to join you cause you have a couple of boards. 3rd first board !? new to surf( or semi new) look into spending some $$$ and snag a surftech softtop they are real surfboards fith a thin layer of foam laminated to the top(no wax needed) 8'+ range these are damn near bullet proof and will be around for years and years!!!! I make, repair, paint sticks and own a shizpot of boards and their still one of my all time favorite's fun easy safe and can take a lickin well well worth the cash. Whatever you chose hope it works for ya and good luck.

thanks for that, i have recently bought a tent so am going to start going down monthly - i have found out that its made in China but from the same manufactures as surftech and Resin8 would anyone recommend me getting on of these i have tried a longer board (7' +) and didnt really get on with it.
I have hired boards for the last year and always got on better with the shorter boards but still wont the mini mal shape to make it easier.

^^ those softops aren't that bad. the only gripe i have with them is the massive amounts of rash i get from them. mainly on the inner thighs from sitting on the boards. we use the 9' and 8'4" or whatever the slightly smaller ones are with the concave in the nose for lessons. the 9'ers can catch anything. they are heavy though
