Go for it, dude. You live in a great place for surfing, lots of good breaks within an hours drive, and you'll never do anything that is so much fun (or at least that is so much fun plus such a great workout).

Longboard for you, 9 foot or better. I prefer epoxy, but that's because I'm new to the sport and epoxy floats better and is more durable. I will be going for a custom glass board once I'm good enough to justify owning one.

Agree with the above post. Some people get softtops, but quickly grow out of it. I started with an epoxy 8' and it took a beating and still taking it. I picked up a short board fiberglass later and have been putting pressure dings and have had to repair the nose and tail due to dings from hauling it around. You are going to abuse your first board especially 9' buy running it into rocks, sand, doors, stairs and everything else in your way. Get the epoxy until you learn how to not pearl in beach break surf, then you can make a better choice after a couple of years of experience.
