i am thinking of getting a new longboard made for me, the guy makes a few different types of longboard like your usual polyurethane foam boards, volan malibu's, epoxy and triple stringers.

which one is best?

with most custom boards you should always speak to the shaper mate, tell him what kinda waves you'll be surfing, your skill level etc and he should magic up something er 'magic'.
build a board to suit your own style...

Depends on you and what you want it for.

Cruisy wave catcher, noserider, 'performance' board, bigger waves etc.

There are no best, most well know names are all good. You need to look at the type of board and style of surfing. Also your ability. If you are a beginner, look at longboards with alot of volume to easy paddle. If you buy a board for the look, you will be very disappointed. Some websites have a chart such as harboursurfboards.com that is very helpful.

Epoxy is good, but can be too floaty. So you can go thinner than you would normally go with a P/U. All boards will ding and EPS tends to be too tempermental with the weather. Some days it seems like it rides better than other days. If you still don't know, buy used boards and save money. When you find what you like, then spend the money to have a custom magic board built to your style. I have 13 boards, all for different waves.
