Longboard - short car!

Hi everyone,
I have a question...I have a Fiat Punto (small 4 door car for those outside UK), presently I ride a 7'6 magic carpet which I love, but I'd really to get a long board, or longer board maybe upto 9'1 or 9'6.
At present I can 'lay' the passenger seat back and get my board in the car no problems. I was wondering if any of you have a longer board and smaller car, and how you fit it in the car or just keep it safe when stopping of in a town or somewhere overnight?
Maybe a strange question? Just thinking of practicalities when owning a long board.
Was even cosidering buying like a used Toyota Hiace or something...not that well off to own 2vehicles tho! :?
Cheers!

I used to have a punto in the UK. Shite car

Anyway, best thing to do is to get locking roof bars - Thule are great but a bit pricey.

Then get locking roof rack straps, and go to a windsurfing shop and get a fin box lock - like a little metal cylinder that locks into a metal plate in the fin box, and run a security cable through it, locking that to the rack, or for a bit of extra security, round the towing eye on the car (a fiat is bound to have one of those  ).

A determined thief would still get past all that, but it would take them ages, so the chances of getting your board nicked are pretty slim. I've been using that sort of setup for years, travelled in loads of dodgy countries locking my boards that way, and never had a problem.

Or just pull their knife out and cut....

Locking roof straps have metal through them and are way harder to cut.

Nice one, cheers for the advice. Taking my 7'6 to Portugal in a month or so, put some of your ideas to use!
