Honu Austrália longboards. Any good?

Hey there,

There's a Honu 9.6" for sale locally, it looks great, but is it any good to surf?
This particular model is 9.6 X 22 1/2 X 3 1/2

I'm an intermediate/advanced longboarder. I'm into single fin nose riders. Is this a beginner's model???

What do you mean by ‘good’ and ‘beginners’? They seem to be fairly standard mass produced boards (nothing wrong with that). There are boards better for beginners but there are few boards good only for beginners. What are you after in a board, what do you surf now?

Hard to say with just knowing the dimensions. No tail, rail, rocker, outline.

My current boards are a couple of tuflites, a 9.4" Robert August, wingnut model, single fin, 9ft 4 x 23.5 x 3. Square tail, not much rocker, Flat bottom. This is my all time favourite Longboard (I had many over the last 25 years). And a 9.6" Hap Jacobs single fin, 9.6 x 22.5 x 2.7/8.

( actually reminds me of the Robert August "What I Ride" model ) The wood veneer construction makes it looks good, but as for surfing "good", I'm sure it will surf up to the level of the surfer. Repairs deep enough to hit the wood and glass shatter on the gloss surface will look ugly

I think sponge boards like Wavestorm or really wide boards with grab handles and tail/nose bumpers are geared for beginners. I don't know of a "standard" longboard that's for beginners only and not for advanced. ( but opposite wise, there maybe progressive longboards that are too high performance for a beginner to learn on ) But in the end, a surf board is just a tool. Expensive hammer, Cheaper hammer, you still got to swing it correctly to hit the nail on the head.

What I can say is your Surftech 9'4" Wingnut is probably made better than that Honu board, which I suspect is manufactured in China. Try asking the dealer where the boards are made.
