Identifying Epoxy or Poly?

Postby bttf » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:57 pm

New to this ... trying to figure out what sort of ding repair kit to get; not sure what kind of foam my board is.

It's an Ellis 9'6". Here is a pic of the ding:

If you sand it and it is made from Polyurethane resin it will have a sweet strong chemical smell whereas epoxy will only have a mild smell. If you think it is PU you might cut out and dig out the fiberglass and a piece of foam from the ding and test it with the kit prior to fixing and see if the foam disappears. Epoxy resin is safe for either variety of foam but won't bond well with polyurethane making less effective to patch. The only real risk though is if it is polystyrene foam and you put polyurethane resin on it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

oldmansurfer covered everything pretty much. If in doubt bring your board to the surf shop to show to them when you go to pick up a repair kit.
