drop knee turn....front lifts

Postby voyager » Sun Mar 13, 2016 9:00 pm

anyone got any idea why when I try to drop knee turn to do a cutback, the board stalls and the nose comes out of the water. I don't think I'm too far back over the fin, but wondered if my leading leg needs to be bent more to pitch my weight forward to keep the speed/nose down.
Is this a common mistake?

Hahahaha....you're on the right track....

Either you need more speed to pull of the move or you need to not lift the nose out of the water as sharply or far....you got the hard part of learning that move out of the way, now go faster or don't push as hard.

The drop knee turn is a stall turn as is any back foot weighted move. The drop knee is to give back leg extension and weight over the fins, The idea is to lift the nose and swing it around the board slows down in the process , regaining your upright stance and placing forward weight will give acceleration.
A plain wall stall without turn can set up a barrel or a nose ride. Back weight as strongly as you judge right hold nose up as board stalls. Move forward either to crouch for barrel or cross step to the nose as a reward.
Look on YouTube drop knee surfing!

Long boarding is about different positions on the and using them like a keyboard to play your surfing tune!

Are you trying to drop-knee turn on your Firewire Addvance in the thruster or quad set up ?

Wrong Bali guy....that's Tudeo....

When I have done drop knees, I do them on the longboard (pictured - 9'6").

This is the video I used to learn.....I'm nowhere near as good as he is, but this is what I emulate/visualize when doing them:

Let me know if I offended you somehow.....you take a lot of shots at me.
Snarky and sarcastic but I love your advice! Good times!

no - it's on a single fin 10'1" Blacker, [heavy board], I didn't notice the stall so much or the nose lift on my Walden Mega Magic 9' which has a
big centre fin, and the two side bites.

Thanks Big H for the vid and pics.....ha ha....yes I've been trying to copy Kevin Miske as well from that exact same video! He just makes it look soooooo easy, grrrrr

Note in that video , ( and it is good illustration) that the drop knee is to get the back foot back and weight the fin and tail , raising the nose. That applies in both the bottom turn an and the top turn cut back. Not much speed is lost either!
