New to the forum and BIC question.

I'm new here, so hi to all.
Started with a 7'6 cortez minimal last february and now I've bought a BIC 9'4" epoxy composite last month (supposedly not the "bad" BICs cause it's the epoxy thing). I'm getting the hang of it quite quick and having lots and lots of fun

Now the question is this; why are they supposed to be crappy boards? A shaper told me so, people say so...

I have read that weight is NOT one of the reasons (16lb / 7.5kg), but then what is/are the reasons for the unique crappiness of the plastic pigs?

I got mine cause it is incredibly tough and I have had the chance to see this for myself when ramming into a fiberglass board yesterday. Not a scratch on my BIC and a hole on the other girl's board you could literally put your fist in. Wasn't my fault though.

I'd appreciate your opinions. Thanx in advance.

Having only ridden one once i can say they were a lot harder to turn than a regular board of the same dimentions. Its hard to explain but the whole feel of the board was just wrong. One thing is for sure they deff are not geared up in the preformance department.

Yes they are indestructable virtually but i have a board beat to death with a huge amount of repairs that surf better. If you are so worried about dinging your boards go for hand shaped EPS (epoxy) they are not indestructable but certaintly last longer than a standard PU.

However the main thing is that you are having fun which is all that matters. If at some point you feel the board holding you back go for a custom shape or a quality off the rack board you will be suprised how much difference it makes.

If you're having fun, thats the most important part, and so, for you, they're not crap.

However, they are very basic mass-produced boards with no subtlety or finesse. Every custom board is unique and tailored to a rider's style and the surfing conditions, and you can feel this in how it surfs. This is what PowerGrooves meant when he talked about 'soul'. You dont need to go back to some ancient hawaiian board for that.

And BICs are heavy, and difficult to turn due to their basic design (rail shape, bottom contour etc etc).

However, they are very tough and perfect to learn on, so keep at it. One day you'll realise that you can surf better than your board can and then its time to get a custom. And soul.

Thanks to all for your info. Quite helpful. About the "soul" thing though, if someone calls out pig safely tucked behind his PC screen, he doesn't really intend to help that much; it's just lack of IQ or either he doesn't read much. Now that's what I meant by "idiot".

Here, I'll explain it: BIC and the other plastic/epoxy boards do very little with the bottom of the board, no concaves, no special rockers, they are preety much flat on the bottom with a computer generated rocker. So, what you get, essentially, is a slower board that is less responsive and not really hand tuned to your needs, same as NSP and other pop-outs.

But, honestly, for a begginer ther is no better board, begginers bang them around, drop them, let them fall off the car racks, the board is practically indestructible. Unless you are an advanced surfer the BIC's are actually fun. I owned one that I used as my "kids" board because they kept dinging my fiberglass boards.

So, who cares, keep surfing it, have a blast. However, if you ever get a chance to surf a friend's board the same size you will notice the difference, but it's still a fun board.

Themathteacher; Yes, I was thinking of trying out other boards (fiberglass but also epoxy...) just to see the difference. I suppose it'll be a big surprise if some day I treat myself to a new one. In the meantime though, I'll just keep at it.
