moving to shortboard

coming down to a 6'3 short from 7'6 funboard. I can surf smaller waves with the 6'3 but when it comes to steeper waves, I can seem to figure out what to do. When I'm high up and i feel like a caught the wave, I stand and either end up pearling, or slip off the back. When your that high up, how do you grip the wave so you don't go straight down? I think I'm not putting my weight forward, and pressing on the back so i don't slip off. Any advice. Steep waves are a mystery to me at the moment.

I meant to say can't figure out what to do. someone give me the secret to surfing steeper waves on a short. lol. Maybe i'm not popping up properly. I find that sometimes when i pop up, i push my nose down when i'm high up and end up pearling.

If I am picturing this correctly it sounds like you are popping up too late. Try popping up a little sooner.. before the wave gets so steep.

on steep waves you have to catch the wave as early as you can and pop up fast then commit to the drop. you cant be half arsed on a steep wave.

Agreed a lazy popup will lead to some sand munching

^^yup.
when i first started that was my biggest problem.. i waited till the wave was getting ready to break on top of me.. when there would be plenty of power behind it before the peak.

then i realized that when the waves are head high its always good to popup just before it peaks.. i mean it will vary depending on your board..and the waves power but just remember.. earlier is always better because.. an early popup means you fall in water.. late popup means eat crap in the water.
