soft top longboard upgrade to shortboard

Postby rat212 » Thu Jul 12, 2007 11:25 pm

hey,
I have a 7'4" Doyle Soft top. it was my first board. I've surfed this for 2 years now and i feel like it's holding me back. i want a nice shortboard that i can surf in all kinds of waves. I've been looking at the Channel Islands A6, and Flyer 2 and suggestions?

thanks.

soft top to shortboard

maybe upgrading from a soft top to a real fiberglass board will be more suitable

Totally agreement here. You need to learn the basics on a real board before you jump on a hybred. You would be slowing your progress and become frustrated by such a big change. As you develope your skills you'll relize it's all about board control and the little ones don't make it easy.

You'd do well with any THIN mini-mal/funboard of around the 7'2-7'6 size, since these feel pretty much like a shortboard to ride (particularly if you're not experienced). What you probably want to avoid is a very thick and long mini mal, since you'll find that it's not much different to surf than the softboard.

A thinner mini mal will allow you to turn a lot more easily than a funboard, and it will feel super responsive after the softboard, but it will still be big enough for you to catch waves on, and fairly forgiving to ride.

some local surf shops suggested the WRV Funfish 7'2".

http://www.waveridingvehicles.com/boards.html

just click funboards on the bottom. it's the first on the new page that opens.

let me know what you think
