the best way is to be making S's along the face of the wave, you see people jumping up and down on their boards to no avail. first try this facing the wave, it is easier, then work on it going backside.

purhcase a longboard skateboard, it made my pumping progress so fast. what you ant to do is unweight youer board as you turn up the wave, and the trun down it by putting pressure on your front foot to drive down the wave, hope that helped.

When ever your going down the line make an S. Thats a way to get speed.
Or when the wave closes out on you and your riding white water just push down this your feet, up and down, up and down.

when a wave closed out on you, is it still possible to pump S's to speed up past the white water and back onto the unbroken wave? When I try to do this, the white water just pushes me off my board.

erm if its closed out surely its all white water. if it sections you can get round it if you see it early enough.

it's harder to pump when it's white water, you need to watch the wave, normally all the breaks i surf have a fast section, so you just need to watch the wave as well as ride it. you should soon notice where the wave is best etc. if the white water pushes you off it's normally because you're stance isn't to strong, but sometimes it happens to me
