im just starting to now be able to paddle into bigger steeper waves on my shortie without backing out after seeing the drop, and actually get down the line for a turn or two. But every time i try to go off the lip riding backside (i cant do it frontside yet but im closer) i end up getting a lot of speed out of the bottom turn, looking where i want to hit, riding up on the face but then i just do some weak a** turn off like the middle of the wave and lose all of my speed. any advice for off the lips?

When you do off the lips you have to hit the lip almost when it's breaking. It's about commitment. Ride up to the lip, don't back off, and just blast it. It's also about timing, you want to get some of your board above the lip and then do the turn.

Hey guys I am about the same place as dondiemand. I am able to do some decent cutbacks but I want to smack the lip and when I do my bottom turn up the face I lose all my speed and stall out at the lip

. The last time I tried to do it I stalled out at the top and almost speared myself with the nose of my board.
Any tips on keeping my speed or generatng more will be helpful.

I would guess that you don't have enough speed going into your bottom turn, or you're not doing the bottom turn effectively / with the most efficiency projecting your self out of the turn.
And if you find your self loosing speed make sure you turn back down the wave and start pumping it back up before you stall out.

Keep it smooth!
Take off and drop down into the flat water now spot wher you want to hit use your front arm to pivot around and then project yourself up the wave face as you get half way up turn your head and spot where you want to go next ideally the falt water for your next bottom tunr. Now coil yourslef up and get ready to unleash your wrath. The harder you bring your shoulders back around the harder and quicky the turn will be. You also want that board up on a rail and not kept flat.
Best book that taught me a lot was the Taj Burrows art of surfing I think its called. He does a step by step approach to each manouver. Its all in your arms and shoulders it will come just keep practicing and getting your timing sorted!

had this problem with my bottom turn as well, i was making it too late. i would get to the bottom of the wave the turn come up the face, my board would stop, and i would be falling into the water. try turning sooner, this should help.
