hey guys

thinking of upgrading from a 7'6 mal to a 6'9 spyder

just wondering whats the general consensus on spider boards? heard some mixed reviews

all help greatly appreciated

It really depends on what sort of waves your surfing and where.
If you are in the UK Spider do make boards that are suitable for our conditions. The Models to look out for are the 407A, XS, and EXEL, i have never ridden one but have shifted a couple and the feed back i recieved was they are ok.

Spyder's are great boards. That is, if you're referring to Spyder in Hermosa Beach, CA. Ian Wright and previously, Dennis Jarvis, have been shaping boards for a lot of the local SoCal pros to Keala Kennelly and Luke Stedman.

I have two in my quiver. One shaped by Dennis Jarvis and one by Ian Wright. 6.5' and 6.3' respectively. Sold an old Jarvis a few years back.

do you mean spider surfboards or is it written spyder?

i know its crappy quality, i took it with a phone.
its a 6.6 spider board.
Im personally having a great time with this board, its floaty which was great for when i bought it because i was more of a begginer so i managed to not fall in one session.
Now that im better at duck diving and such i can duckdive it nicely, that used to be a problem. Its really responsive, i personally really like it even though i would now prefer a shorter board.

this is my first board (not counting the bic rentals) so i cant give comparisons.

i bought it yesterday so theres no going back now, its a 6'7 exec havent taken her out yet but shes all waxed up and ready to go. think ill name her mary

took it out last week, it'll take getting used to it but other than that.....

I buy my boards from local shapers ( Kernow ). Keep the money in the UK.
And yes, they are South African.

its so different from my old mal in everyway, paddlings harder-sitting on its harder- trying to get used to where to put my back foot is hard

hey danny, know this is an old thread... but interested to hear how you got on with the board a year on?
got a good deal on one so couldn't pass it up... got a 7' thruster loose evo, funboard/shortboard dealy. got it for €320 with bag wax and leash. brand new!!!!
was dropped in the shop and was missing about 10mm of the tip of the nose and a miniscule bit of delam on the rail near the nose. easy fix. but like i said, happened in the shop so no water damage. taking it out for the first time this weekend... fingers crossed for waves..

Would never buy another spider board. By far the worst craftsmanship of any board I have ever owned.

staff in newquay are pretty damn rude too.

Global Surf Industries is a thirld world manufacturer using specs from different shapers. A well known shaper will get a royalty from the use of their design and name but the boards are not the quality that the original ones where. So the board design might be awesome but with only thin layers of fiberglass and fast cure techniques they ding and break easier than american made products.

I don't think GSI is still making boards with the Spider logo, you have to go to their local shop where they are having ghost shapers make good boards again.

Some spider boards are still around at shops but mostly in the used market now.
