This may sound like a pretty stupid question but what i don't get is how people whos boards are shorter then they are put their feet on the board before u pop-up because u do use ur feet to pop up ay??? but anyway if they did wouldnt the front nose dive

I've always rode longboards till I had a 6.10 shaped a little while back. I was use to having at least a foot of board past my feet.
What worked for me is, I grab the rails around chest level, and at the same time I'm pushing up with my arms, I bend or jack knife my right leg till I feel my foot on the traction pad, then I just kinda pull my left leg under me.

see it, think it, do it

best advice ever given to me by a fellow surfer.

I think, despite most people never admitting it, that you end up using you knee a bit without realising it. My friend asked me thre same question at the beach a while back and after a few waves seeing what I did we decided that a knee must be involved somewhere as pushing your whole body weight up solely on your arms is seriously hard work!

You could cut the shape of your board out of cardboard, practice popping up and each time so you can see where your feet are landing. I posted elswhere that years ago i used to take the fins of my board and practice on the bed. If your feet over hang the bed then you can't cheat by using the floor as a lever, if that makes sense. You shouldn't be using knees or feet at all.

Its got very little to do with strength its got much much more to do with technique. If you arms are knackered from popping up then somethings wrong either that or you been out too long
I found doing floor popups takes a lot more effort than out in the water. havnt worked out why yet.
I see some surfers do touch the knee but mostly this should be avoided.

I'm pretty new to shortboards, but I realized that I was dragging my back foot and it wasn't enabling me to get my weight forward to pick up speed. Now it's like I'm throwing myself and extra half foot in the air to avoid it.

yeh when I got off longboards I thought it felt weird too. But you learn pretty quick. Now it feels weird to have board under my feet while paddling,

Becasue you are pushing to baord into the water rather than hauling your weight up.
