heard that custom boards get dinged easily? is it true or just a load of xxxxx? could get a nice custom for £210 inc fins and leash? is it better than the 6'6 NSP Shortboard for £244?

thats not true i only ride custom boards and there stronger than any of my friends boards yea customs are the best because u can have them made to how u want it get the custom :wink:

A poput (NSP or BIC) are tougher than custom boards but, custom boards are waaaaay better for surfing on. A custom board isn't made of glass ! So they will last a while and be able to stand a good few hundred beatings, but they will eventually ding and if you surf reef breaks, then could snap.

You mean, like glass as in a mug, not fiberglass...?

Custom boards are fiberglass (as in 'glass)....they are tough, but maybe not like bics or nsp's, which are essentially made for people who are a tad bit careless with their boards.

As long as you don't drop your board off your car frequently, a custom board is much better. But if performance doesn't make too much difference for you, then go with a bic or nsp, they're cheaper

There's guys doing custom in epoxy, too, y'know.

But the idea that you wouldn't get a board over an NSP because it might ding is silly. What do you think people have been riding on for the past 30 years?

I have to agree with what the others have said. I would much rather surf a board that is made for the way I surf.

depends what you wanted tho. no point getting a custom minimal cos there is such a huge array of off the peg ones availiable. ditto shortboards unless you are good enough to notice differences in shaping yada yada.

i know sure as hell i wouldnt :wink:

depends on a lot of factors, if your a learner epoxy is good cos itll last, and you wont really notice the extra weight. If your average sized and know what your lookin for then you can get a good off the peg or second hand glass board easy. I got a custom cos of my height and weight i could order exactly what i wanted to fit me where i couldnt really find a ready made board that fitted the bill.

Ye, I meant glass as in glass(windows, cups, bottles..etc). Just saying that they aren't going to break that easy.

Custom = you go to a shaper and he makes a board for you.

Local Shaped Board = You go to your local surf shop, and buy a local shaped board off the rack.

Pop out = Bic, NSP.............

I've only owned 6 boards, the first five were longboards, and local shaped off the rack boards. The last board I bought I had custom shaped, just because it was my first short board, and I wanted something that wood work for me.

How's that custom 6'8" working out for you? My used 6'8" was actually shaped by Charley Baldwin, a New Smyrna Beach local shaper. Who shaped your board? Clay Bennet?

My board is 6.10, and its working surprisingly well. I had it shaped by Drew, owner of Inspired Surfboards. I took it out today for a while although the waves sucked, and the water was a frosty 66 F. Had to break out the 3/2 full suit for the first time of the year.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Charley Baldwin, good on ya for buying local.

Hardly ever get into a 3/2 over here on the east coast UK, we are already in boots and gloves, and the hoods will next.
Back to the board get a custom board. I have four and are all for different conditions. Mind the one i shaped myself rides like a pig in whatever surf i take it in.

Thanks, I figured I may as well buy local. Yeah, I'm gonna test out that 6'8" in Charley Baldwin's back yard, probaby tommorrow on the Dawn Patrol.

Is Inspired Surfboards a Saint Augustine establishment? I usually stick around Jacksonville, but some day I may stop over in St. Augustine.

Yeah Inspired is a St. Augustine shop. You need to go thru the Surf Station to place your order thou.

Lot of pretty good surf spots here in St. A, I like the fact you can drive on the beach here.

Only just had my first experience of a beach you can drive onto, earlier this year. I hated it...it really ruined the whole beach having chavs in souped-up chav mobiles trying to race around the beach, and I'm sure that environmentally it must be really bad for the beach!
