you need to practice. You probably took one big step down but now you have to persevear. Just keep it up. Frustration will only make it worst.

Did you try starting on a funboard since thats what I did. I'm able to use my 6"6 now and its awesome. Try popping up with your hands near your waist since thats what I learned and it prevented me from pearling as I did before.

you could take some lessons.

there's a million things you could be doing/not doing that are giving you difficulty. If you have friends that surf, ask them to watch you. Otherwise, lessons from a real surf shop may be your best bet.

If you can describe exactly what your main problem is, maybe we can help. But I don't know if you're actually catching the wave, pearling, falling off to the side, having the board shoot out from under you, not being able to balance, etc....

How big are the waves? how big are you? Have you tried practicing in the whitewater? Are you jumping on your board at the last minute, or actually paddling into the wave?

I was doing pretty bad, then I had ONE lesson, the guy pointed out 3 mistakes I was making (back foot was on tip-toe, front foot was too far back, knees wern't bent), and my surfing has sky-rocketed. Really can't recommend getting a lesson enough! Having someone expreienced with teaching surfing help you out is the best way forward.

I also made the mistake of going straight for the big waves out the back.

Taking your time to get the basics right in the whitewater will pay off in the long-run.

Here endeth the lesson
