3" thick AL Merrick

Postby floater » Fri Aug 11, 2006 7:55 am

Hey all!! I just got my first board! Its a used CI Al merrick Mongrel @ 6'3" x 19 1/2" x 3". I am goin out to Venice to test it tmr..

I started surfing this summer and have been getting up consistently on a 6'7" epoxy bic board on unbroken waves. Do you guys think this is a good choice? I know i probably should have gone longer but the fact that its 3" thick should keep it pretty stable and buoyant rite?

I'm 5'7, 135lbs and a swimmer. Let me know your thoughts!

Yeah if it is 3" thick then it should have plenty of float.

Nice dimensions. Its wider than most 6'3 shortboards too. That board should be alright for you as you are light. Deffinately has a lot of float for you.

Awesome....I'm stoked that you guys think the same as me...For a moment i thought i was being too ambitious. Gonna go out now and check it out.....will let you guys know how it rides.

As far as stability buoyancy and paddling ease goes, what longer board would you say this is equivilent to?

Alright, so as I promised, I went out this weekend and surfed at Venice breakwater with my new board, and it was awesome! I was a little wary of paddling and pop-up, but it all happened so perfectly on the first wave I paddled for. The waves weren't all that great, but the few that I caught felt beautiful. Looser, faster and more feel. Infact, I enjoyed riding it so much on the weekend that I called in sick on Monday only to drive down to huntington pier for a session on larger sets. Consequently, I walked into work today looking like this----> while telling everyone I was awfully sick the day prior. LOL

I highly recommend these dimensions for anyone who wants to move on to a shorter board. Will post pics of it soon.
