there's loads of threads on here about this, do a search you'll get loads of info. Seems like the best advice though, is just get out, practise and experiment.
I'm at the same stage as you and it's totally frustrating and all i seem to do is wipe out spectacularly but one day It WILL HAPPEN! Practice, experiment, evaluate....see what your doing and try not to make the same mistakes twice.

practice in small waves, when its small and weak you have to pop up and start pumping very quickly, before you drop into the flats and lose speed. Get your popup as dialled as you can by practising it regular at home every night. Then go out and try and practice frontside as much as you can, most people find that easier, when you can do that start on backhand, and practice.

when im going down the line, i either: put my hand on the wave while im doing the bottom turn, if i take off when the wave is just about to break or if the wave is already peeling, i take off in the direction the wave is peeling.
also when i was on holidays when i was first learning to do bottom turns, i would get my mum to park the car in the drive way (which was on a slope) and i when i wasn't surfing, i would go on my skate board and go down the slope, then when i got to the car i would put my hand on it and do a bottom turn, just like if i was surfing. it really helped me get it right.
