im an al merrick fan so really i think they are the best friggin boards ever so i recomend them to anyone with $400-$700 to blow cuz they are worth it

true....i bought mine used for almost 400 (in really good condition) and its the best board ive ever bought.

dude i got a 6' 4" for a $80 from one of my good friends and its in great condition, tell me that isnt a good deal but i rode it into some rocks and put a bunch of holes in it..haha

Hi, I've been riding a 7'9" Minimal for the past year, I'm 6ft, 180lbs (13stone) and feel ready to drop down to a shorter board. I can pop-up 90% of the time and have started to turn (although I'm struggling on the Minimal). Ive been looking at the Al Merricks as I have heard nothing but good reports, but I am a little unsure what model or size I should be looking for, any help appreciated?

im about 6 ft a few below but i only way bout 130 but i do great on any al merrick between 6' 8" to 7' 4"...

just thought i would join this thread since i have just bought myself an Al Merrick board, 6 6" cant wait to get it in the water!

I'm not a big fan of Merricks. You are buying a ton of money worth of logo, and you can't really get what you really want, like when you buy from a local shaper. I'm not saying that Al isn't a good shaper, he is great, and I like his shapes. I'm just saying when you are going to spend 400-700 dollars on a board that is not adjusted to your needs, why not buy a full out custom? With that kinda price you could probably get EPS/Epoxy and Volan cloth.

I do like his single fin shape, does anyone have that? I'm about to copy it with some adjustments.

i have a 6'3 merrick, i love it and its great for the waves around me

for that price you can get a custom- you get a long chat with the shaper about what sort of board you want and need, a board made exactly to suit your height, your weight, your style and standard of surfing, and the type of breaks your going to be using it on, made by someone local who knows the local waves. Plus you can have whatever graphics you want on it etc.. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

i do agree...if i was gonna spend that amount on a board i would get it shaped especially, but i bought mine for a fraction of that price so im happy

what alot of people dont know is that merricks are now made in the same factory as the global surf industry boards such as the NSP, blue, and the likes... your paying for the name, because its the same quality as any other global..

now if you could get your hands on a handshaped board by him thats a different story.... Al is an amazing shaper, why do u think kelly rides for him..

i agree that single fin is amazing.. my buddy has one and it goes so nice

single fins are nice but the first time i tried it i had trouble balancing so i never really wetn back to, f.y.i i used the turbo fin if anyone has ever seen it...

Um, re some comments above; when you buy an Al Merrick...you are not paying for the name, you are paying for the shape. You are buying a licenced replica/product that will work pretty much for certain, and provided you buy a board that is suitably volumed, shaped & sized for you & your local conditions it will work as well as if not better than a locally made board.

All Merricks are machine cut (including Kelly's) and hand finished, it is the only way to achieve total consistancy with shaping. This is well documented elseware.

A "local" shaped board is not always a good board, shapers have bad days, hangovers, flesh-up blanks & manage to pull a sellable boardout of the mess. some of them are simply bad-shapers.

Buy local by all means, but check out his work before layin out cash.
