I prefer short boards because they are better

(jk BTW).
No really its because shortboards suit the style and type of surfing that I naturally want to be doing, such as faster surfing with tight raduis snappy turns, airs, 360s, reverses, all that sort of stuff.
And whilst I appreciate some really good longboarders can do some of that stuff on a longboard, I think its unanimously known that longboards are not designed to do that but the type of shortboards that I ride are

.
Also they are cheaper, lighter to carry, and easier to stow and travel with.
And I can live without nose riding, hanging 10, tandem riding, 'gliding' and cross stepping

.

The whole long crusing ride thing doesnt do it for me. Although when I borrow a long board, its fantastic.... for about half an hour and then I want to go back to a short board
While you can definitely make the most of a small or cr@ppy wave on a longboard, I get more fun with that five second ride - paddle paddle, late take off, take the drop, and in the final second before it closes out try and do something spectacular/ambitious/stoopid with it

i dont like riding a log at all, i cant cut, i cant 360, which is the limit usually around here unless a good swell comes in. i can use my fish for small wave days and then when it kicks up over head grab my shorty. i actually dont understand why people ride a log when i can catch wave just as good on a fish. (granted not as far out)

hmmmm... interesting point about the fish. But can u knee paddle a fish??? Are there alot of 6'5" guys riding fish ??? (no) I think maybe if you a a scrawny lil' waif of a person shortboardin' is probably more in line w/ your body. Whereas if you are "long" (6'5") a long board would probablyb e more appropriate

damn you!!!.....j/k I'm 6'5" & the shortest board I am comfy on is my custom 7'2". I had a buddy who was 6'4" & maybe about 205lbs. (seriously) & he rode a 6'6" shortie. So I know it's possible....but u gotta be good or ride that one board quite often I think. I also had one buddy who was 6'2 but rode a custom 5'11" shortie (NOT a fish!!!!) but this guy was a Ripper 4 real 4 real.

niiiiiice. I find that knee paddling is really fun, I think my next board could one day be a fish....however some session I get 25 -30 waves an hour on my longboard & I don't think I ever want to give up that feeling.

I shortboard because I don't like surfing in slow motion.

No, I can do better than that. Articulate myself better...
Riding a longer board (although my only experience with longer boards is really only riding Libby's 7ft Mini-Mal) is like listening to a Jack Johnston CD- mellow & fun, but not really challenging nor does it stretch me.
Sure there is elegance and joy in the simple pleasure of taking off early on swells & enjoying the glide, trimming, going fast easily & big carves, not to mention getting 5 over the nose sometimes.
Sure my wave count is slightly higher...but it's just more. Nothing else.
Riding a shortboard in good surf for me is like seeing Bob Mould play live; a viseral & charging experience. Raw & the real-deal. The set is over almost as soon as he starts, or it feels like it anyway...but man, the energy....wow. And so is shortboarding for me...
Make sense?

I started on a longboard but they are a bit slow and you can't do much on them. I like the challenge of a short board. Not to mention, I like to surf all over the island and its a lot easier to transport a shorty.

i cant afford a longboard!!
i also like the speed and precision of shortboarding and its more of a challenge as if you put a foot wrong ur goin down.
i would also enjoy being more laid back on a longboard if i could afford it

yeah I would say about shortboarding that I like how you can be creative on the wave and surf how you feel, its an extra type of body landuage to express yourself, granted you can on a longboard too, just a different way. Read through everyones past post and they're surfing pretty much somes up what their stoke is and what they're about. Powerful gouging bottom turn, pump down the line, cutback, powerful snap and mabye a floater in the close out. Thats the perfect ride for me, now if I can nail them all down solid in the same wave Ill be set.

yer i dont relly like the whole lazy look i like the adrenaline rush. and the fact that when i see a long boarder you just like "oh look its a long boarder" but when you see a short boarder you feel so inspired and pick up on things and thats the feeling i want to give others. but thats just me.

if i wanted to fall asleep i would ride a mal, i mean seriously some of those boards are so big you may as well call them a boat. i wanna carve the face!
