SURF MORE

I heard that if you spread your fingers just a tad you catch more water and move a bit faster. Seems to work ok for me. Also, make sure you are balanced on the board, if you are too far back, the board will drag.

About 4 years ago, during a painfully long, flat summer, I started paddling on my shortboard in preparation for the inevitable tropical season. We could go 3 months without a significant swell, then suddenly thrown overhead or bigger groundswell, and a hell paddle out. I just found that going out and paddling for 30 minutes or more when there's no surf, keeps those specific muscles in shape. I've done this year round in the less than tropical waters of Jersey, you're in San Diego so you should have no trouble.

Ive been considering going out for a paddle on flat days just so I can be out there having some peace - but afraid of looking like a dork lol

Well that occured to me too, like guys were just wondering where the hell I was going with my board when it's flat as a lake. But that quickly dissipates when I'm paddling out on a really consistent day with little or no trouble at all, making it outside without feeling like my shoulders are gonna explode. Trust me, it works, and well worth what little embarrassement you may suffer.

shortboards are gona be a tough pattle no matter what you do, but what you can control is limiting drag...watch your position on the board...your feet....and make sure your getting the most out of each stroke with your arms.....other then that....condition condition condition
