Not really, no :?

They're quite 'old technology' pop-outs and are heavy and have very rough rails, and the bottom of the board is too flat
That's all fine if you're a learner on your first board, but if you're good enough to be on a shortboard or a fish then you should be looking at a custom board or a surftech, something like that :D

Ye, I completely agree. I started on a BIC and wasn't bad, but after a few months it just got dull, heavy and sluggish. It does slow you down and holds you back a bit. My new custom made funboard which is shorter is so much better, much quicker, lighter and more stable - perfect.

ok, it's soooooo frustrating cause the bic short board is sooooooo cheap can you recomend anywhere else to find a board in this price range

Bic makes pen's. End of. They have however made some decent stuff for windsurfers, but there is so much out there that is better.

Stay away.

You do get what you pay for, i agree. I dont want to bad mouth bic's but I cant really find anything good to say about them. I started on a 7"3 bic mini mal because its what a begginer should do, but I think if you plan to go surfing a lot just go out and get a proper board (custom).

I found my bic a little bit heavy and clunky - it wasnt all bad, it just doesnt flow and move in the water like my new board. The bic is hard to pick up speed on waves and you find yourself being held back all the time.

Im not sure what to suggest, a bic is alright for money to learn on but if you can go for a custom board

check out the used boards in the local shop- I have actually never been the first to ride any board i have ridden (that reads kinda weird...)

just keep on checking back if you dont find what you like. if you are sure you want a shortboard, the shops around here are usually loaded with them for sale, I would assume it would be the same near you considering around here shortboards+location/waves= doesn't work

just make sure you know what you are looking at. really get a feel for any delams and old patched dings, which could have leaked into the foam.

Have you surfed before by any chance? If I could learn all over again id would have bought th longboard bic 9ft, you have a lot of fun with longboards and they are the best to learn on and the best thing about them is when you move down to shortboards you will always have a longboard, rather than a load of shortboards

amen.....

shortboards look cool, but who gives a crap if you spend hours in the water on crappy waves paddling for everything. If I had known anybody else who surfed when I bought my shortboard (waay to early) I would have bought a funboard or something.

I also haven't tried NSP boards, but they seem to feel more like a surfboard than a plastic bic. do some searching on the forum, and there is a lotta stuff on the pros/cons of NSP

I agree completely with the first reply - if your good enough to surf a fish or a shortboard then you've got no place on a bic. Bics serve their purpose as a "Relia-board", something big and chunky to take out in all conditions (i.e Mal+)
Don't be afraid to go second-hand.Over half-price and you can pick up a real deal if you know what to look for - main thing is to look for cracks/dings on board (particularly small cracks or depressions around the fins and leash plug/close to stringer/nose or tail of board). The deck of the board may have some slightly undulating depressions (from duck-diving), but unless they're v. big, nothin to worry about.
If you can surf and are lookin to make transition to short board, i'd reccoment about a 6'8 squashtail, with plenty of volume (ie thick rails).
Happy Surfing

I eat you up

 Excuse me, To Mr. drowningbitbybit: It is quite imporper to buy a custom board for your first board, who the hell has that kind of money.

To Languna, yah not to put you to shame but it typically thakes more than a few month to become aquinteded with surfing and to order a custom board, hell ive been surfing down at nany for 6 grand spanking years and ive never had one custom board.

To: Olso. Hey check your facts, they dont lie, bic shortbord, aaah they suck, their longboards are top line, where else do you get a board that you cant beat the xxxxx out of. What do you ride you sneaky little norwegian, a $900 iceburge. Anyway where the frig is Norway, dude dont they make bic pens all the way in your little country of fleshin'. And dont metion windsurfing. Gracias, from your little mexican valentine

And to all, i couldnt help but see that you all posted more than a hundred fifty comments, Dude thats its totally radical, we here in the pole of north think it lame and if your a real surfer you should half of your comment posting time surfing.

Shhh, calm down, relax....

I think, not sure but think (see, thats where I make sure of my facts, or at least make it clear if Im not sure, rather than just jumping in) that this wont be Fred's first board. A shortboard or a fish would be unsuitable for a first board anyway.

In my humble (but at least reasonably well-informed and experienced) opinion, anyone who's competent enough to be on a shortboard or fish, shouldnt be looking at a pop-out.

Im just off for a cup of camomile tea and to listen to a jack johnson CD now....
