My First Shortboard

Postby TheLearningCurve » Sat Nov 03, 2018 2:57 pm

Hi,
I’ve been surfing a 7ft board for a while now and I want to move to a shortboard. As a weekend warrior I’m well-aware of the time it will take to master the pop up, let alone any manoeuvres, but that’s time I’m willing to spend. What do you think would be a good board for me to buy as a first? I would probably go for something with a little higher volume, as I want to get my strength up by going to a local freshwater lake and spending time paddling back and forth.
Trying out different boards and styles isn’t really an option for me.

I’m 6’2” and 160lbs, generally surfing 2-5ft waves (waist-head high). I see people often using shortboards there so it’s defonietly do-able! My skill level according to https://surfsimply.com/surf-coaching/vo ... ht-ratios/ is a level 3.5 on my current board, working on improving my cutbacks.

Thanks

It will help us if YOU:
1) narrow down your choices to a few boards you think you would like.
2) let us know what type of break and conditions.
3) what you can currently do on your 7'0". (surf simply says a level 3.5 surfer can do basic cutbacks and lip hits, but can you do those going backside ? )

I was considering this board package: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/bic-dura-te ... age-orange
I know it’s cheap, but for my first board I don’t want to spend too much.

The surf is variable, sometimes clean head-high and sometimes a clean waist-high. It can also be swampy mush but still surfable.

I can do cutbacks front and backside, still working on backside lip hits but frontside is all good
