(Retro) Fish twin fins feedback

Postby Mat6920 » Wed Apr 05, 2017 3:44 am

Hey,

I never had a chance to ride a retro fish twin type of board and really keen on having one for small days, can I have anyone feedback who has ridden one of those. Few questions :

- How is it different to a all around type of board when on the water ?
- What are the main notable surfing techniques differences compared to a short board ?
- What are they good and bad (or less good) at ?

Thanks !!!

Hey Mat you are getting lots of advice about this in surfboard advice, why not read the answers there.
Your question will draw the same answers no matter how many times it is asked

Jaffa, my question is about how does a fish with twin fin feels like and how it is surfed differently from a regular shortboard, appreciate the replies on other thread but they have nothing to do with that question.

Quite simple really, watch Mark Richards, the original twin fin king rail to rail surfing body torque even more so in comps where there was little to offer other than mush. Each tail in a twin fin fish adds a little bite to the rail for punchy turns.
Other answer beg borrow but don't steal one and see how it fits your style of surfing in mush. :D

....notice in the video at the beginning in the gutless 1-2ft waves he's riding a longboard.....and he rips.... :)

This is a better representation of mush surfing by a non-pro but still a good surfer....

Thanks Big H, just watched all those videos, great stuff !!! i am going to watch tonight the Fish entire movie , the last video you posted is probably what i could expect at my level. Now i need to get someone to land me this type of board haha. Are those boards supposed to be ridden with same or higher volume from what i currently ride you reckon (Lost Rocket v3 6'1 35L, i m 188cm, 83kg). Once again many thanks ! Will watch the full documentary tonight !

Can you surf your rocket in mush like it the last video or do you bog out? Fish shapes aren't magic; it's just a board in the end. If you plan to surf really weak mushy waves that you currently can't on your current board, I'd suggest to go bigger.

hummmm... unless i am really in the sweet spot i will loose speed I reckon, maybe a groveller around 39-40L can be a good option like this in 5'9. I just saw videos of guys surfing in tiny tiny waves and looks like fun.

See if you can go to a shop and demo some boards, even if you have to rent them out. Best way to sort out what you like and don't it to get your hands on one like Unc Jaffa said previously.

I buy used....try them and sell them very quickly sometimes....sometimes I like the board and keep it for awhile....a couple are favourites. I try everything I have a question about and sort out what I like and what works for me via trial and error. I enjoy it....not the fastest or most effective way but fun for me.

FWIW I tried a couple few fat grovellers and a biscuit copy & a retro fish all around 40-43L.....I decided that for me or for the waves I surf (same thing really) that I don't like that entire genre of boards...other styles of boards I have tried are more fun, take less nursing and suit me better for whatever reason. Other people surfing other waves do like them (the fat grovellers). Now it's on you to find out for yourself. Enjoy the journey!

Yeah it s true mate, i think you are right, I need to try as many surfboard as i can, buy the used, try and resell until i know what seems to be the best match and make a custom one. What works for some people dont work for others in surfing but good to talk about it.

A twin feel fish draws different lines across the face of the wave compared to a thruster finned shortboard and a single fin mid-point forward pin rail. But notice the "across the face of the wave" part.

1) How is it different to a all around type of board when on the water ? - they probably both bob up and down to the ebb and flow of the wave.
2) What are the main notable surfing techniques differences compared to a short board ? - Surfing technique riding a twin-fin fish is the exact same. You have to have a good paddle-in, bottom turn, setting of the rail, rolling from rail to rail.
3) What are they good and bad (or less good) at ? - the tips of the tail crack off very easily and you have to spend a lot of money repairing them.

So i tried this morning the DHD mini twin fin in very small and fat waves, first thing i noticed and that happened all the time, right after take off, the tail was drifting straight away and worse when a bit of white water comes under the board. I just fell like I had no control on the board. Will try again tomorrow morning but weird feeling, could set the rail

It's good that you're trying them out....only way to satisfy your curiosity. Try in better waves and see how it goes.

Someone asked if the fish is good for mushy days, it really is! Here is a wave on a big but mushy day. Not my best wave but notice how much it got and it still kept

So a bit of feedback ! I ended up ordering a custom from Dick Van Straalen in 5'10 21 1/2 2 3/4 , very good board, flies but I made it clearly too big for me which is such a shame ! so i m selling it ! and in the meantime i had the opportunity to buy a christenson fish in 5'8 , AMAZING !

Some pict of my DVS that i decide to sell in Sydney !
