Surfing a biger shortboard

Postby surf904 » Sun Sep 06, 2015 5:34 pm

Recenetley ive been contemplating on whether I should ride one of my more high performance boards or my more beefy shortboard.
The boards are a 5'8x19 3/8x2 5/16 - The "high performance one" and its a firewire hellfire and 27.2 liters.
and 5'10x20.25x2.44 and 32.5 liters .

I weigh 152 and am 5'10 and I know how to do cutbacks and snaps and airs(sometimes). But with my 5'10 im having trouble getting a faster "whippier"? turn or cutback. The 5'10 could possibly give me more speed but it is one slow turn and doesn't look or feel like a good turn...
If anyone could help me i would really appreciate it thanks!
Also I have been working out and training more so maybe its just my strength but i think its the board.

Wow you sound pretty advanced. What's your go to spots in jax?

Those boards sound big, both of them. What is their foil like? Seems like their volume should be lower based on those measurements.

Just stomp harder on the bigger board. It will teach you to use less flick and more rail/power which will improve your surfing.

A longer, wider, thicker board will always be harder to turn. However, there's no reason it won't turn easily enough because that's still a really small board in the grand scheme of things. Also make sure you have the right size fins in. Fins that are too big can make it really hard to turn. Longer, more drawn out turns are not a bad thing and many times they look better. Learn to put your board on rail. Many younger "shortboarders" have no idea how to use their rail and their surfing would improve ten fold if they did.
