What surfboard is this?

Postby Gagewell » Fri Sep 04, 2015 7:44 pm

So I just moved to Florida from Illinois about 2 weeks ago, and I wanted to try surfing. So I rented a board for a day and loved it. Then, I wanted one for myself so I found one used on craigslist for cheap. My question is what kind of board is this? It's a 7ft board by Michael Dolsey Designs. I don't know if its considered a longboard, a gun, or a longer shortboard so any advice as to what it is would help so I have a better understanding. Thank you so much ahead of time!

Most would consider that a Fun Board. We sold M. Dolsey boards in our shop. The ones we had were made in China. Glassing wasn't as bad as some other China made boards. But I haven't seen those in about 10 years.

So since it's longer should I duck-dive with it, or turtle roll? Or would that depend on my size and weight?

Depend on ability and what you feel like suits the moment. You can turn turtle with a 5'nothing board if you wanted to.

Getting outside isn't dependent on duck diving....I surfed a hollow reef break head high yesterday with sunglasses on on a 9'6"...just waited for lulls between sets to get out back or kicked out over the back of the wave at the end of the ride thereby staying outside.....and I'm not that good....

I would plan on being prepared to do both and try to find a way out back that requires neither.

It depends. How tall, how heavy, how skilled at board sports, how good a swimmer are you ?

I'm 5'11 and 130lbs, and a good swimmer. I've never done any board sports besides surfing and I've only just started, but I've been able to get up.
