Ordered new shortboard (yes, again!)

Postby IB_Surfer » Sun Jun 21, 2015 5:06 pm

You all know that I am always searching for my perfect board. For me, it's a mix of performance with high volume of waves. I can ride as small as a 5'10", have tried smaller boards, but it seems I don't catch EVERY wave, so I have compromised a little performance for a lot of waves. Keep in mind I'm 175lbs, so if this seems like a big board it's cause you are a small surfer. Single concave, thumb tail, 5 fins set up.

Micah Shannahan from Addict Surfboards is shaping it, he is my go to shaper for anything performance, especially EPS. He has ghost shaped for many major surf brands do really a good shaper.

The new board will be 6'1 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 fin set up. This one will be EPS with no stringer, so in order not to break it I am having it wrapped in carbon fiber, it acts as a stringer without adding any weight.

Micah has agreed to do pictures as he shapes it, so here is the beginning:

Starts with a blank piece of surfboard quality epoxy foam core:

Will post more as they become available.

Wow, right from scratch, not even a machine doing the initial outline.

Mate! I think we must be on the same 'wave' lengh !  like my pun there?

I just picked up this eps 6'1 x 19 x 2 3/8 in the weekend which is also a 5 finner. Basically on the same premise, wanting to go a little shorter and performancy but still have some volume.
Even the outline looks pretty similar with nose and tail width etc.

Mines got a bit of vee or double concave through the back fins though which i'm looking forward to but his boards normally are just a straight single concave like yours. It's also got more of a slight rounded-pin than thumb but pretty close.
Check out a link here- http://www.barronsurfboards.co.nz/shop/ ... -epoxy-hog

It's also made of this crazy new construction over here called 'cyberline' which is epoxy but it has a stringer (some sort of pale green resiny looking thing, not a normal stringer) and carbon strips in bits for strength.

Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to it!
Can't wait to see how your's turns out!

Benji - What are those extra pieces around your tail pad ? One of the left rail and two at the top corners.

Yeah it does actually! how did you find that board went? I'd be curious to know what the stringer in mine is actually made of. I'm still frothing to give it a try! What was your volume? Apparently mine is 29.2L

Hey Waikiki, I think they were some foam additions (similar to the tail pad) from memory although I still haven't had a proper play or look at the board since so will have to confirm!

No idea on volume, that one is 6'2"x 20 x 2 1/2, which is why the new one will be narrower/thinner.

On mine the stringer is actually high density foam, you can special order it that way. Almost no additional weight

That's the exact same dimensions as my other board when I decided to go shorter and thinner too!! Haha

My new one is the board on the left. Dropped about 4l volume, lost s little rocker, gained maybe a fraction wider nose, more pin in the tail and thinner rails. I've taken my other one to around 6ft so thinking the new one should also take that

LOL, I actually lost 30lbs 2 years ago, so everything I have is for a 200lb surfer, which is why I had to have my shortboard reshaped and now making this one.

That looks soo ball'n! Do you have any other images of the whole board?

Did you do that yourself and what's the cost like to add all the carbon? I'm thinking in the summer time I might have to give shaping a try and do one myself!

It's the price of an epoxy board plus about $100 extra for carbon. All together I am spending bout $630 on this board. Micah is the best deal in town when it comes to performance. Expecting delivery this weekend, will post final pictures when done.

Maths teacher OR Batman? I think your cover is blown

Gonna be hard waxing over that black beauty. I wonder if you can buy black wax?

(wanders off to google)

Ok, yes you can

http://tandemsurfandsport.com.au/?produ ... fboard-wax

(I'm sure its available in uncivilised places such as California)

Looks soo mint!

Can't wait to hear how it rides and what a fully carbon board feels like? What thickness of glassing do you have on it?

Hand made epoxy boards come with a very light and flimsy blank, so most of the time they are double or triple wrapped anyway. This has 6oz over the carbon, but much less resin than normal

Ah I see, so you're kind of using the carbon to cut down on weight by being able to use less resin etc rather than still putting the amount of resin on as usual and just having a super strong board for the same weight of the normal epoxy?
