Mediterannean waves: VENON Fish 6'0''?

Postby omoutop » Thu Jul 10, 2014 3:07 pm

Hi!

I am located in Greece and more particularly in Naxos island, where i windsurf a lot! But, when there are south winds, we have beautiful small waves of Mediterannean type.
I really want to ride these waves. But it is really hard to find second hand material here in Greece. I just found an VENON Fish 6'0'' (6'0''-20 1/8- 2 3/8) but I am afraid that it might be too small for my 1m75/80 kilos (5.7/176)

I am not a very experienced surfer. I am mostly oriented in windsurf. But i would love to be able to ride these waves.

Can you guys help me out with this one?

Thanks

I reckon it will be too small. Firstly you are reasonably heavy (I'm over 80kg so that is not a criticism, just that most small boards are designed for short little surfers under 70kg). Secondly, from my knowledge of Greece you arent going to be getting very powerful waves most of the time, they are just going to be windblown. Thirdly, you seem to be more or less a beginner, so a shortboard is not recommended no matter where you surf.

(actually, just looked at some pics of Naxos waves, you get some reasonably good sized ones it appears. Head high plus. But I dont know if that is common or pretty rare)

Anyway, as a beginner you will definitely want a bigger board. At least 7ft6 to start off with

I second that. Fish boards vary in dimensions and some are definitely geared more toward beginners. The dimensions you describe aren't ideal for a beginner. If you're set on a fish, and I don't blame you as they can be learned on, I'd go with something wider and thicker, and a bit longer. 6'2/6'4, 22", 2 1/2 at least. The volume is very important for a beginner (paddling and float). To second the other recommendation though, stability is also an issue for beginners and though a fish with a lot of volume may work, the stability of a funboard or short longboard (7'6"-8') would probably serve you better. If the waves are consistent out there then you'll learn faster and a fish might work, but if the waves are inconsistent and you don't get a lot of board time, then a long or fun board might be better. Either way, give it a try...you'll love it!
