Pop-up habits - Bad or Good?

Hey,
I have been surfing for a little while now , not terribly long, but Im riding a 6ft shortboard, I can do little cutbacks (not proper roundhouse ones, just like a little turn around thing but not a proper full cutback) and snaps and I feel pretty good about where I am. Ive been surfing a beach break ever since I started, where the waves are quite small. Heres a picture of what it looks like on GOOD days :

but typically it will be blown out little waves . Infact probably at least a half of the days are just mushy little whitewater lines that look like this:

It actually still amazes me how the waves are so different like all the time.
Anyway, I have noticed that my pop-up has somehow become (or maybe it just started that way?) really slow where its like one foot after the other , and that sometimes ruins the waves for me because by the time I'm up theres only one little section i can hit instead of the usual 4-5. I was wondering if this is normal for someone at my level of surfing (for 1 year) and the pop-up will just naturally get better as I become a better surfer, or if its going to become a bad habit later in my life, and I should try and break out of it now.

Im only 13 if that makes a difference.

Ive been surfing that break for the whole time ive surfed, and I live right across from the best reef break in the area. Ive been watching it for more than a year even before I started surfing , infact it was probably the guys there that made me want to surf in the first place. Anyway here are some pictures of what it looks like when the swell is big :

Anyway , I kinda fought off the urge to go jump into that break until yesterday, because it was just perfect . It was quite small and the tide was high so the reef wasnt poking up from the water like usual, so my parents said okay... I went in I probably caught three amazing rides (which made all the pounding into the rocks and scrambling through the kelp COMPLETELY worth it)before it got bigger, like really big (atleast for me) and I knew that I needed to go in, I was trying to scope out the best way out. In the end I took the smallest wave i could find and rode it half the way in before landing straight in the huge pile of kelp that surrounds the break (in the channels) scratched myself up pretty bad on the reef coming in and got some piece of something stuck really deep in my foot - didnt realise until this morning though , I guess my feet were so numb yesterday from the cold I couldnt feel it. The point of that story was that that was when I REALLY realised my pop-up was slow because it was such a fast drop in that I found myself frantically paddling to stop myself from being dragged onto the reef after wiping out (MANY times) . So what do you think ? Is it normal to be slow at popping up at first , or should I try to make it faster and smoother in one move?
Thanks very much :D

Welcome to SW , and good you for trying a little more than usual, you need. To do everything to make your pop up smooth and fast and in one hit, there is quite a bit of advice on how to do it on site.
If you come from the land of the long white cloud there so many great breaks to go to when you get your skills up.
Where ever you are at 13 you will just get better and better. Enjoy your journey

So I should try and work on that now?

Ive always sort of tried to get myself to just push up but whenever I tell myself "okay, this wave you're going to just popup really fast" then I end up thinking 'but what if i mess it up and lose an amazing wave?' and somehow thats enough to stop myself .

Show the same courage as going out at the fiercer break, just push up and go, when you do half baked one knee pop ups you unbalance the board if you are not careful, and you've already half accepted a wipeout ( of which you need not be so worried ) so you are slow you can use the power of your legs in standing up to impart more drive to the speed of the board ( combating the slowness). Don't worry yourself too much it is a skill that develops and you are about right on the learning curve, better days of surf speed up the process too, mushy days hold everyone back

If you are a begginer then a bad popup is normal. Work on it, at least you have identified an area of growth

Wish I'd learned to surf as young as you.

Best exercise you can do for pop ups is squat thrust. Do two to three reps of fifteen every day. Your pop ups will become fast, string, and sure. You will also be able to pop up many more tines without tiring.

Hi there, I read this thread ages ago and meant to reply.

I know exactly where the two spots you show above are and what each requires. You are 13, so that helps me with my advice too and you have a shortboard.

Right now, my recommendation to you is to stick to the beach break you show first, Muizenberg and practice your pop-ups there. We're headed into winter and NW winds. Muizenberg will get bigger swells and the NW is off shore there. There will be some great days there in the next few months for you to practice all your moves and spend more time in the water, get better, get STRONGER, get FITTER and quicker at everything you need to be for the other wave you show.

I wouldn't recommend you go there just yet. It can be heavy and hectic. Especially with the coming winter swells, it could prove quite difficult and dangerous.

Get stronger, fitter and wiser with your surfing, hit some big closeouts in Muizies and then go to the wave across from the parking lot with more skills and fitness to take it on. If you know someone who surfs that wave regularly, ask them to take you out there and guide you through it. The channel, the takeoff, etc...

Enjoy the winter, some nice swells are coming, look at Saturday this week! Nice!
