My new shortboard here

Hi everyone. It's been a while! I hope you all are doing good. I'm here with my new shortboard. It's a second hand and I bought it 2 days ago for a reasonable price.

It's a John Carper Hawaii, model Shane Dorian-3, thruster, squash tail. The size is 6'0 x 18.75 x 2.35. I have no idea what ruler scale of the thickness is. Must be something between 5/16 and 3/8 (but then there's no point in working it back to ruler scale, right? ) By the way, I'm 177cm and 70kg.

The board on the left hand side is a local brand - 5'10 x 19 3/8 x 2 1/4. I've been riding only this board with FCS K2.1 for about ten months and therefore I am very used to it.

This early morning I gave my new mate a try for the first time, with the K2.1 set I have. The surf was about shoulder high but not so good because many of them would only break on the top. I caught all the waves I paddled for, though.

However, my first impression was, "why is this board so light!?". I guess I'm too used to that 5'10. Also, my late drops seemed to be a bit delayed, maybe half a second late. When going down the line, it was a lot faster than the speed I'm used to. I couldn't really hack the lip because of the wave condition, but I found that going vertical is heaps easier with a squash tail!!

After about an hour, I had enough of its looseness so I got in, went back home and switched fins to FCS UL-5(bought this recently and felt it was too stiff for my 5'10.) Got out again, was surprised that it worked fine with my new board. Made it stiffer and more stable and I was able to draw some better roundhouses.

I was learning to blow the tail and trying to pull off some air(though not successful) on my 5'10. Now, I'm sure I'm going to look like a beginner again  but I'm very positive this is going to be a big change to my surfing style. This morning as I was pumping across the face, I felt like my board could fly anytime!

Cool, I like the start of this thread, I think everyone should post their new board, even if just new to them. So, anyone reading this, if you just picked up a gem post it here!

Thanks! I hope people will share their similar stories too. Things like, you had been riding one board for so long when you found another one, something very different, that changed you. But I know I'm not alone for sure.

Well, I don't have a new board (this month) but here are most of my shortboards that I have owned for the last few years. I still have a couple but most have moved on to a new surfer

Awesome picture, thematchteacher. I hope one day I'll get to own a number of different surfboards too.

It's been nearly four weeks since I posted this thread. I'm back here to say I'm doing really well with my new board. In the first 6-7 sessions I was even thinking about trading it back for a wider nose one. Well I'm glad I didn't do it!

I tried different combination of fins with this board:
K2.1
UL-5
UL-5's side fins + K2.1's middle fin
K2.1's side fins + UL-5's middle fin
(sadly I haven't got any other fin to try)

I've finally come to a conclusion that UL-5 suits me best. It won't allow me to pump up and down across the face much so I am forced to bottom turn and hit the lip more often! With my old board and K2.1, I would pump for speed too much and tend to do just one end turn.

Yesterday morning I just had one of the best waves of my life which I did 2 snaps, one carve and one cutback but wiped out as I was going for a rebound. I linked each of them with a good bottom turn, no pumping at all. I still need to work on how I put weight through turns because these fins are so stiff!

I want to encourage those who want to try something different. Don't be afraid of looking like a beginner for a little while. It's worth it in the end!

Might be the angle but looks quite thick - what are the dimensions?

Is that a round tail? Do you like it? And what's the dimension by the way?

It's 6'2" x 20" x 2 1/2"

at 200lbs I need a little more volume. Also, ordered EPS with a foam stringer to make it lighter and more buoyant

Sorry, posted it on another tread. Love the board, been my go-to board since I had it made. Recently had more plugs put in for a quad so I could use it in mushy surf too
