New to shortboards

Postby hippo » Mon Jul 16, 2012 8:34 pm

Not sure if this is in the right place but here it goes:

I've got my mind set on a shortboard. I've been surfing foamies and longboards for 3 or 4 months. I picked it up pretty quickly so that's why I'm already looking into a shortboard. I'm 16 years old and I skimboard, wakeboard, skate, windsurf, sail, bmx... lots of stuff, so I figured it wouldn't be too difficult for me to start on a shortboard so soon. I also learn quickly. What's your opinion? Should I continue to surf foamies or move on to a shortboard?

Thanks

edit: I'm also rather small and light, disregard my username

There is a world of difference between a foamie and a shortboard. Fortunately, there is the middleground of the mini-mal. Forget about the shortboard until you can surf a proper mini-mal surfboard.

It took me about a year and a half to switch but then again everyone advances on their own time so the biggest question is do you feel comfortable enough that you can drop the size.

go for it, if you are wrong keep surfing the foamie a while longer then break out the new board later. Whatever you do, have a blast!!!

I am one to believe in a good, diverse, quiver. If you know you like surfing, you should have a board for all of the different days you go out in. A good and basic longboard and shortboard is a great start, so that you can surf more days than just the days that suit your one board.
