Shortboard for a (land) longboarder

Postby redfly » Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:30 pm

Hey guys,

I've surfed before- not too often as I don't live at the beach. I longboard- as in on pavement- and am good at it. I'm quite a progressive rider- busting slides- carving- balance isn't a problem, I don't think. When I went out surfing I was on a longboard and a friend's 5' 8'' fish I personally felt that the longboard was a little clumsy and harder to get up on. It was a little slow and so maybe I don't think I was doing it right. My friend's fish had a wayyy better feel- Granted, I didn't get up everytime- thinking maybe 3/5 waves. Once I was up though- it was great. Now since I'm moving- I'm thinking about getting my own board since I'm going closer to the beach. Have you guys experienced this? That it' easier to get up on shorter things? I mean two years ago getting up on a bodyboard was no problem since it just easily slides underneath my feet. I'm just worried about it being different in bigger waves. I tried my friend's board in around waist/chest-high. Let me know if you guys and gals have any ideas- thanks!

That's usually backwars, longboards are more stable and usually eaiser to get up on, but my daughter feels your sentiments exactly. She likes longboarding ok, but loves my 6'2 quad better. Because she is not that good, she gets bounced around by waves on the longboard, and has problems turning it around in time for the wave and seems to always pearl it. But for some reason she doesn't pearl the quad and likes that she can duckdive and handle it easier.

I would take out the longboard again just in case it was a fluke day, but maybe you are meant for a shorter board, or not, it's something unique to everyone. In bigger waves, she would suck on a longboard or the quad, and not to be rude but until you get better so will you, so go with what you have the most fun with.
