shortboard newbie. What type of board should i get?

Postby surfbetty » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:24 pm

okay so pretty big transition:i've went from a spongeboard to a thruster. and that's renting them each day and i've got the paddling down on the thruster and duckdiving and i'm so stoked on the thruster i'm gonna buy my own finally. i'm just wondering what size i should get..? i'm 5'3 and weigh 114. plus i'm 16 .. if age really matters. it's gonna be the first board i own. and i kinda want a firewire board because i heard they are pretty durable..?

Being 5'3 and light, you a lot of options. 6'2 seems to be the sweet spot for surfers whether you're a beginner or a pro. You can possibly go a little shorter to like a 5'8 if you wanted, but it would take sometime to learn. Don't limit your options down by brand name and such. To be honest you should buy a used board first because I guarantee you that you WILL ding your board no matter how careful you are. Hope this helps!

The thing is you don't want to go too small and end up catching no waves, which won't help your surfing at all. You might be best going for a board with a bit of volume and width if you are going for something round the 5'8" 6'0" range. But i also reckon you won't need a bigger board than a 6'0". 5'10" might do the trick..
