New to shortboarding(trans. from LB)

Hey everyone, new member here... I just got my first shortboard. A Simon Anderson 6'0 TPF3. Its used(but in great condition), and i got it for $275 from my local shop. My buddy who owns the shop said it would be a good starter shortboard for me to learn on and then i could move on to (i dont really know how to say it) "harder" shortboards to ride as i progress.

I still need to put a fresh coat of basecoat and wax on it but other than that it looks great!



Ive been riding a 7'6" NSP board for the past 3-4 years..and i just feel like i need something more challenging, and something that i am able to do more tricks with ect..longboarding gets boring after a while. And although i know transitioning from a LB to a shortboard will be very difficult, i am prepared for the challenge!

If anybody has any advice for me as to some ways i could transition easier, or just advice for shortboarding in general, please share!

Sell it and buy something 6'6 or so. 6'0 will be a shock to the system, it will be hard but if you keep at it and surf regularly then there is no reason why you should have problems.

Practice popping up from your knees on land (don't let your feet touch the floor on the way up).

yeah there is no way my mom will let me sell this haha it was a birthday present.

i go surfing every day at 6am(and im on the surf team at my HS so i do that every day during the school year)

ill practice the popping up. im sure i will get the hang of it after a month or 2 of 2-3 hrs a day. the main thing im keeping in my mind is "dont give up!"

i took a bit of a closer look at the board and noticed it is not in as good condition as i origionally thought..there are some dings in it that are spiderwebbed and chipped. i am going to return it to spyder and get another one..rediculous.

i just got back from the shop. traded the Simon anderson board for a Rawson 6'3 squash tail. It is in great conditon, there is only one noticable ding and it is a fantastic looking board. Pics soon to come.

On a shortboard you need to paddle for the waves that you think are going to break down on top of you - sooo much deeper under the curl than a longer board. You need to be almost freefalling to catch a wave if new to short boarding - and don't stop paddling ! Actually paddle to the shore - yes, I say actually paddle to the shore for fifty waves to really get the feel - just keep paddling and paddling all day. Trust me

It's a fish!! Bad idea in my opinion. You have to be good to surf a fish well, plus it only goes well in certain waves. You need something that goes in all kinds of waves or else you'll struggle and get cheesed off. 6'0" maybe too small also unless it has some volume? Let us know how its going.
