Surfing Waves

Hey guys!

I recently moved from Europe to San Diego and have now started surfing. I've rented a softboard three times now and are getting to catch more and more waves. Since I will live in southern California for four years I would like to buy a board. I have a Volvo V70 so the board can maximum be approx. 6'10''.

My weigt: 170lbs
Length: 6'2''

What type of board do you recommend? I will surf 1-2 times a week.

Mainly because I couldn't think of anything

Seriously they have invented roof racks
and with the seats down you can put in a longboard.
A good volume 6'10" or 7ft board, funboard a decent shape will take you there
just be aware 3 surf rentals lots to learn,
but " you're out there having fun,
in the warm California sun"

He's right. Get a longboard and some roof racks. I like those Costco specials. They're well made for foamies and would be perfect for your level. Failing that you can go get a small egg that will fit your car. Encinitas makes good ones...

You could get a 6'10 fat funboard shape. It is mostly width that provides stability so aim for something 21-22" wide, it will look a bit silly being short and fat but lots of surfers use them and they can be great!

I would jump straight to buying a hardboard, I would never endorse buying a foamie as one grows out of them too fast. Pop-out or "custom", your choice.


That said, I would agree that roofracks + longboard (9'2" or so) would be a better solution from a pure surfing point of view. You can grow out of a midlength, whereas you can't really grow out of a longboard. If you drive long distances though, I would advise against soft roofracks. They kill your fuel efficiency, and at high speeds can sometimes vibrate and take off paint (so I have heard).

I got a good offer from a friend today. He is selling a NSP Funboard 7'2, you think it will be good for me?
