Few MONTHS is the key word here.
Learning you want to see results quickly, and a shortboard is NOT suited to that. If your determined and damn straight will NEVER give up then sure. But a shortboard as a learning board? Sure it can be done, but lets face it, you want to ride waves when your learning and a shortboard like you say will be a long long time before he starts riding the waves...
Just seems more practical to get softboard or mal, a softboard has good resell value and a mal can use even when have a shortboard anyway on those too small days...
If he wants to progress to shortboard a softboard which can sell for about same you buy for, will be better so he can learn and enjoy the experience whilst still learning everything, but then when he wants to move on, its not like he loses a LOT of money on the board X_X
I don't know, thats just what I'd recommend... We all use shortboard here, but honestly, how many of us started on one, and only will ever use one?
He could get a 9' longboard though, or a 7' 3" mal or so and those boards he might use constantly, but if money is an issue the softboard would make more sense considering the resell value :/
