Surfing Waves

Picked this little beauty up today.

5'10 X 20 X 2 3/8

Its a my new groveller board for mushy days. Interested to try out this moon style tail. Was gonna go for the half moon tail like the math teacher had on here but went for this instead.

Its really light and the rails have some volume to em but not too much which i like i think this will tear it up in small surf. Will let you know when i try it out. But that wont be for a while as swell is looking to have some size for a week so mixed blessings

some of my surf buddies are under the impression that anything that is wider and thicker than a shortboard but roughly the same length/ a tad smaller equates a fish

awesome dude. I got a board very similar that I love, hows the rocker look on there?

^^^ the rocker is very slight. enough to handle an inside reform i think but it certaintly was not designed for a late, steep and hollow takeoff. But i wont be surfing it in that anyway

naturally i intend to experiment with it and see exactly what it can handle. will post up a report as it looks like the next week or so i might get a chance to try it out in a variety of surf conditions.

update - took it out today as conditions were small to mid size closeouts with occasional shoulders. Actually it was ideal for testing the board out as it was mixed bag of conditions a lot of mushy sections that reformed to a solid closeout. On the bigger set waves it was steep 5ft closeout so that was ideal to try out my drop ins.

Here's my take on the board.

Ease Of Paddle / wave catch-ability = 10/10 (every wave i wanted i got - i can see this board may make unpopular with the locals on crowded summery days
Duckdiveability = 7/10 (compared to my shortboards but otherwise no problems there at all)
Maneuverability = 8/10 (surprisingly agile. I mean it wont compete with a potato chip shortboard but it still turns super easily)
Speed = 8.5/10 (this one shocked me the most i think as the board is pretty damn quick not comparable to my epoxy quad but nonetheless i was really pleased with that.
Mushy wave factor = 10/10 (my board of choice for mushier/softer waves - in fact i would really like to try this board out in sizable mushy waves say 6ft+ and see how it reacts)
Steep take off factor = 6.5/10 (i made all of my late takeoffs on the closeout sections including a few mad drops but to be honest the board is not designed for that. Its totally makable but i can see it being a touch sketchy on bigger and even hollower waves)
size factor = perfect for small to medium sized surf 10/10 for that. Not likely to be taking it on a big day now am I

All in all im stoked with the performance and so glad i have such a board in my quiver i can see this being one of my favourite boards as its ideal for times when a shortboard just is not practical or should i say just makes hard work of it. I recommend such a board design for any one

what fins are you running on it? I found the VII F4's work great on mine at my current weight (170lbs). Made it nice and loose

^ same fins as me. My fav fin set-ups. One of the reasons why i stick to future fins these days as i find they really work for me.

Dude, nice stick, you gonna love it. I take my 6'1 "fish that isn't" at sunset cliffs and baja when it's overhead++, it makes it easier to get into those big rollers and yes, you miss no waves. I only not-use it when it's steep or when I need something easier to duckdive, but it's now my go-to shape. Enjoy!!

Actually thats one of the prime reasons i got the board was for the cliffs / south side pier OB on the days when its a little bit rollier. Looking forward to really trying it out there.

Funny you mentioned south side OB, that's exactly where I use it. The north side will be dumping and crowded and the south side will be bowling mush and I get on it fine, sometimes all alone. I was there this morning LOL

^^^ we will have to do a paddle out in OB sometime - i usually surf afternoons due to work. Its funny how i never have crowd issues on the south side even if the surf is really good. You can get some really long rides if you shoot the pier and link up on the inside on the other side. I don't know of many breaks were you take off on reef and end up on sand

I'll send you my digits, I surfed it after work last week a couple of times.

After thinking about your board and comparing it to mine I am going to have one made similar to yours but in my size. I was reading an old article in one of my old surfing magazines about the JC Hawaii Retro Rocket and it reminded me of your board.

The one I have is super fishy, thick rails, thick nose, wide tail, more of a disc shape, gonna have the new one made like yours but with a rounded pin tail, not thumb. Also, gonna have the rails thinned about a half inch so I can dig it in the rail.

board looks strikingly similar to my 5'6 lost rocket!
