Floater!

Postby Wanabeshredder » Sun Nov 22, 2009 4:13 am

Just wanted to share with everyone that today I landed my first floater ever and am super stoked!

Heres how it happened:

Today was a fun rippable day 3-4 foot day. Small enough that I didn't have to hold back at all on turns like I would in overhead waves, but big/powerfull enough that I could get good speed for turns and didn't usually have to pump.

I was feeling great and having a blast.

Midway through my surf session I caught a smaller waist to chest high wave and did a floater completely accidently. I took of and went up to hit the lip like I normally do, but this time when I got there I hung there on the breaking part of the wave for a second or two before dropping back down into the trough with a bunch of speed. It was backside so I didn't really see what happened but my dad sayed that it definetly looked like a floater.

I hate floaters.

The reason I hate floaters is because they're quite a technical thing to do properly yet people are always claiming them. If you do a floater 'by accident' then it wasnt really a floater I reckon.

Bah humbug grumble grumble grumble.

^^^ have to agree there. Floaters are tricky little gits to nail at will. I occasional get it right but practise makes perfect.

Stoked for the original poster - hopefully you can start to do them at will the more you practice. Its funny hat you can do by accident as i have pulled 360's without wanting to and even done a small air and landed it by accident. Pity i cant actually do them but it does show the potential is there so its something to work towards :-)

Floaters are a move most neglected - many see a section and try to make it around - I see a section and pump to ride it as a floater ! _ got some silly huuuugggggge ones that I landed and just felt so so stoked ( then got piledriven !).

Good on ya for the floater - look for them more and get better - an honorable way to make a section, ride a closeout or just have a wipeout !

Ya, I agree with esonscar. You will either make it through the section and continue riding the wave, actually have fun surfing a closeout, or just have a gnarly wipeout which can sometimes be fun. :D Make sure to keep practicing them.

can do them pretty much at will on a longboard.... anyone got any tips for getting floaters down on a short board? have fluked a few in the past but when i try on purpose i usually get caught by the lip. as in the lip landing on the deck of the board.

what i found on the longboard, is that as i see a closeout section forming i ride mid face to build a bit of speed the hit the lip and go light on my feet as the wave closes. pretty easy with all the float of a longboard. is the principle pretty much the same just need to be more accurate with the timing?

Shortboard - More speed (momentum) : if you think its gonna dump pump like 'hell in the toilet' and try to 'see' where you want to land - go mad, go atop then chill - the result should be a nice big floater !

Landing is of course an optional extra  !

^ I think I am being duped - I did not write some of the above, I dont allude to things as in 'pump like hell in the toilet' I say things as they are. I wrote this:

[ Sorry Admin - sommit funy here at my end It appears ].

Practice floaters when the surf is closed out. I learned how to do them at my local beach break. I think they are fun when you come down and can connect the section.
