A few months ago I decided that I had gotten good enuogh at my funboard to transition down to a shortboard. So I started using my neighbors 6'3 spider board. After a weak or to of learning to catch waves and stand up on the board I've been able to ride it fine. At my current level I can do some basic turns and cutbacks and I feel comfortable in up to a couple feet overhead surf. I can handle close to double overhead but I get pretty nervous in that size surf and I cant really do much on it except catch it and ride down the line. I am 14 years old 5'7'' and 110 lb.s
My problem now is that my the bord my neighbor gave me is pretty old and yellowed and I am wanting to get something thats newer and more tailored to my dementions and skill level. What I would like is suggestions for a board, either a particular model or just dimentions, and if dementions what price range is resonable for someone of mhy skill level to pay for a board

The 6'3 seems like the logical size for progression, but for your size a shortboard should be about 5'10 x 18.75 x 2.25 at a higher skill level.
If you think the 6'3 is easy then go down, but not all the way down, you are still learning. I would say around 6'2 x 19 x 2 3/8 for starters, with the understanding that you will go down in size in a couple of years.
As to prices, where are you located, I'm sure some of us know a shaper in your area.

As to shape, I prefer thumb tails for stability, a squash once you are better. Get slighlty less rocker for easier glide, but eventually you will need more rocker for performance. Standard industry specs is single to double concave on the bottom, but a single concave is also a good choice.

I live in Manhattan Beach and I am 14 also. I am getting a custom board shaped at Becker in Hermosa this saturday and I get to go watch. You should drop by Becker and check out some of their boards. They have a pretty good selection and you could get one shaped if you have to. The guy who is shaping mine is named Weatly. What school do you go to, I may know you.
