Shortboard pop up technique

Postby surferdude1 » Thu Sep 03, 2009 4:57 pm

I've been watching several youtube videos on shortboard pop up technique. There seems to be two schools of thought:

1. Push off the rails and knees/forelegs to spring up onto both feet. With this method there is a moment where the surfer is completely in the air and not connected to the board, -or-
2. Hold onto the rails, pivot the rear leg to the deck grip, and then stand up to position the forward leg while releasing the rails. With this method, the surfer is always connected to the board from laying down to standing up.

What do you do?

I tend to go w/ #1, but when I see it on video #2 seems much more smooth and controlled, which could result in better takeoffs.

Cheers!

I think people put to much thought into it. The best thing you can do is pop up in one motion and either hit it or wipeout. After enough fails it will all of a sudden click. Once you pop up enough its all by muscle memory and you dont even think about it. I just pop up in one motion and swing my legs under me. I also like pushing up on over the rails to get me started turned in the right direction. For example if im taking a left i will push a bit on the left rail so the board starts turning left while im popping up. Method 2 will never work  Also I hate popping up going straight down. Throws me all off for everything. I prefer to always take a angle dropping in so i have some extra seconds to setup on my feet before im at the bottom of the face.

i agree with trifish, its the best way, also its what kelly does :D

doing it this way you put momentum on the front and as soon as you land its extra weight pushed to the front so its really nice.

hey, just joined this forum today.

i know there are probably countless topics/questions about this, but seeing as this question relates to the topic, here goes...

i just switched over from about a 7'5 funboard to a 6'0 fish
the funboard was too easy to ride/catch waves, and too boring since i could really try carving at all.

so i got this board (superfish actually) and im having difficulty now, as should be expected.
i was surfing yesterday and can catch the waves fine, but as im about to pop up, it feels like i'm just going to pearl, so i get scared and bail.
when popping up, should i feel like im going to pearl but just try to get up anyways?

Sounds like you may be getting up to late. Fish boards have very little rocker so they can be tricky on steep fast surf. The thing that has always helped me with riding them is to get to my feet earlier and take a strong angle so you hit a high line coming down the face. If you make it to your feet late and take a steep drop straight forward theres not much rocker on those fish boards to save you and you will pearl.
