I need some tips on riding a short board. I am 12 years old and surf Manhattan Beach, I ride a 6'8" McCoy. I usaully surf with my older brother. He tries to help me as much as he can, but I have many problems when I paddle and take off for a wave. I usually stand too far up on the board. I then try to fix my stance, and get all squirelly, and fall. It has been making me really frustrated and I hope that some of you will be able to help me. I need all the tips I can get.

Make sure you have your hands level with your chest (not your shoulders) when you pop up, and kinda shunt the board down and forward.

And if you havent already got one, then get a tailpad so you can easily slide your foot backwards onto it.

Sounds like you are still learning how to stand on the board and your front foot is all over the place. Take a few minutes in the whitewash and practice your pop up before each session, just to get used to your stance. That way when you go in the lineup you won't have t adjust your feet and feel woobly.

Lastly, are you getting on one knee then your foot?
